Daniël Verlaan on RTL Z about infostealers: “This is how many organizations get caught”

Following the news about the tens of thousands of Dutch victims of infostealers, RTL News tech reporter Daniël Verlaan was invited to the desk at RTL Z. During the interview, Verlaan shared insights into the research and operation of infostealers.

How does the criminal chain of infostealers work?

Verlaan paints a detailed picture of how criminals work:

“First, they see who they can catch with such an infostealer. The more, the better. And then they're going to see: who did we actually hack all and what's interesting in between? And the criminals are selling that data again on the dark web or Telegram.”

He further explains how this data is attractive to other criminals:

“That, in turn, is interesting for other criminals. They can watch: hey that person works at company X, or at the Police, or at the government. And that's how many organizations get caught.”
Collaboration with Passguard

Verlaan carried out the investigation into the tens of thousands of Dutch infections with infostealers together with Passguard. About this, he says:

“We did this together with Passguard, a Dutch cybersecurity company that protects organizations against infostealers and sees where it happens. They keep a very close eye on those dark web markets, what is offered. So you can see very well: new infections are added every day, new victims. We did an analysis of that.”
